Reference Letters for Job Candidates. In order to better coordinate the transmission of job application materials from economics job candidates to prospective employers, the Association encourages both job candidates and employers to use EconJobMarket.org, a not-for-profit organization that collects economics job application materials centrally and transmits them to designated employers, or a similar centralized application transmission service. The goals are to reduce the time required of reference letter writers who are often asked to tediously submit information to individual employer web sites, and also to transmit the information to prospective employers electronically so that they can conduct more efficient job searches. Advertising Requirements for Academic Jobs Filled by Foreign Nationals. The US Department of Labor has issued new guidelines regarding the use of electronic publications to advertise for academic jobs that are filled by foreign nationals who seek permanent visa status in the US. After many years of requiring print advertisements, freely available electronic-only publications now satisfy the job advertisement requirement. Submit a nomination letter, current CV and at least two supporting letters by September 15, 2011. More information, including past winners, is at http://www.aeaweb.org/committees/cswep/awards/. Junior Faculty Mentoring Workshops. CSWEP will hold a National CeMENT workshop in conjunction with the ASSA meetings in Chicago, 2012, aimed at mentoring junior faculty at institutions where promotion is based primarily on research productivity, with a focus on addressing the unique challenges that women face at the beginning of their careers. Application materials at http://www.aeaweb.org/committees/cswep/mentoring/; deadline is October 1, 2011. To: Members of the American Economic Association Journal Publication Policies. On April 15, 2011, the Executive Committee voted to drop "double-blind" refereeing for the Association's journals. The change to "single-blind" refereeing (the referees' identity remains undisclosed) is effective July 1, 2011. Easy access to search engines increasingly limits the effectiveness of the double-blind process in maintaining author anonymity. Double-blind refereeing also increases administrative costs of the journals and makes it harder for referees to identify an author’s potential conflicts of interest arising, for example, from consulting. To insure conformity with copyright laws, the Association has begun to screen all articles accepted for publication through CrossCheck, a service provided by CrossRef. The American Economic Review has evaluated the quality of the data and processing code contained in its online data archive in order (1) to assess the extent to which authors of empirical articles complied with the Review's data submission policy, (2) to evaluate how easily the results could be replicated, and, (3) when the submission was complete, to attempt detailed replications. Results of the evaluation are in an appendix to the 2010 Report of the Editor of the American Economic Review, published online in the Supplemental Proceedings of the One Hundred Twenty-Third Annual Meeting (pp 695-699). Job Openings for Economists has been published only electronically for the past decade. Starting with the August 2011 issue, the Association will resume publishing JOE in print format, in order to ensure compliance with Department of Labor regulations for obtaining work visas for non-citizen economists. Print issues will be distributed via the U.S. Postal System two to three weeks after they are published electronically. Annual subscriptions will run from August through the following June of each year, and are $50 each. To subscribe go to http://www.aeaweb.org/joe/subscribe/. Single issues are available for $45 each. Ad Hoc Committee on Ethical Standards for Economists. Following a decision by the Executive Committee on January 7, 2011, President Orley Ashenfelter has appointed an Ad Hoc Committee to consider issues regarding ethical standards in the economics profession. Robert Solow chairs the Committee. The other members are: Derek Bok, David Card, William Nordhaus, and Nancy Stokey. The Committee welcomes pertinent comments and suggestions from AEA members. Send them to regina.montgomery@vanderbilt.edu by June 30, 2011. EconLit Now Starts with 1886. The AEA has added records to EconLit for journal articles from 1886-1968 that were previously in the Index of Economic Articles, Vols. 1-10. EconLit on library web sites now includes older articles from 146 journals, 95 of which are currently indexed. Many of these journals are available through libraries' full text subscriptions and may be linked to/from EconLit. The Association's 2012 Continuing Education Program will feature three concurrent programs on January 8, 9, and 10, 2012 in Chicago, Illinois. Participants can choose from among: Cross-section econometrics (Guido Imbens and Jeffrey Wooldridge); International Economics (Gene Grossman and Gita Gopinath); and Advanced Interactive Teaching Methods in Economics (Patrick Conway, Tisha Emerson, KimMarie McGoldrick, Michael Salemi, and William Walstad). The AEA Committee on Government Relations invites comment on the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) "vision" workshop reports. These reports and comments will help determine what research will be supported by NICHD over the next decade. Most of the workshops do not have economist participants, so comments from economists on gaps in the white papers could make a difference for future support by NICHD of economic research. You can access the reports and comment (one or two paragraphs) at http://www.nichd.nih.gov/vision/comments/. Submit comments no later than June 11, 2011.
